ARTIST STATEMENT
SPRING FEVER explores filtration, containment, and the tensions between gravity, material and light. Those layers are represented by translucent and textured materials, common to daily life but presented in unexpected forms. Hand bent Neon glass tubing, colored with noble gas fill, earth phosphors, and tinted glass anchor the pieces thematically to the body of Laura Stevenson’s work.
SPRING FEVER represents the beauty of organic chaos, the flourishing of life, and the free, positive growth the artist would like to set as our collective vision as we work through challenging and oppressive political times. SPRING FEVER celebrates what is good, in order to fight for more. While the best time to plant a garden may have been yesterday, the next best time is now; and the memory of ripened fruit is what gives us the energy for today’s heavy lifting.
The objects in this show are grouped in various forms, at different stages of transformation. ‘Containers’ hold light within, though the halo of what’s possible is cast beyond the sculptures’ physical form. ’Tendrils’ explore that first breaking through of life’s next phase, where a vessel opens to release the growth which can no longer be contained within. ‘Formations’ layer and fold and build on themselves, until they produce ‘Blooms’. Blooms represent a point in development where evolution is still very much in progress, but an explosion of color and vibrancy marks the fork in the path from one to many. Viewers are invited to decide what stage of the cycle each sculpture represents to them.
